Step by step on how to connect xp and linux machine

Linux and Windows XP: They come from diffrent world’s right? There is no way you can possibly get the two to comminucate…. behold the magic of TCP/IP, sure the machines are different but the protocol that allow them to talk remains the same. It’s all in the tools and knowing how to use them.

The following examples use Debian Stable and Windows XP Home Edition, however the basic principles still apply.

Topics of this article will include:

  • Windows File Sharing on a Linux based PC
  • Remote Desktop Administration between a Linux Based PC and a Windows XP based PC

Windows File Sharing on a Linux based PC

Before we begin you will need a few tools. On your Debian machine, open a console window and become root temporarily.

  • At the prompt type: su followed by the super user password. If you do not know this password either skip this part and hope these tools are already installed and you have the appropriate permissions to mount a netwrok drive…. or stop reading now as this probably won’t do you a bit of good.
  • If you have entered the correct password your prompt should say something like root@localhost. Now we have the authority to add some software, we can do this using one of the best tools for the job. APT debian comes with APT so there should be no need to install it, as it is the default package manager.

Note: APT allows you to install applications directly to your machine from a web server out there in cyberspace. It check dependencies for you so there is less fear of mucking up your computer. Now that were done bragging about the reliability and user-friendliness of APT, lets get on to the task at hand.

  • At the prompt type: apt-get update this way we know we have the latest packages on our machine.
  • Once APT is done making all of your libraries and other software shiny and new type: apt-get install samba and if your plan on connecting to a network printer and printing: apt-get install cupsys cupsys-bsd cupsys-client foomatic-bin samba smbclient gs-esp a2ps
  • With all of this installed walk on over to your Windows XP machine and create or open a Windows Share.

There are two ways to do this on Windows XP Home Edition.

  1. Drag the files and folders you want to share into C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents and right click on Shared Documents. If you have a small network of people you know and trust and your firewall is tight, then you might want to check Allow Network Users to Change My Files. If not then make sure this is disabled as it will allow people to add files and folders and delete files and folders. For added security you may wish to change this folder to READ ONLY, as usesr who have downloaded your files may change the attrivutes once they have the file on their local machine.
  2. Right click ANY folder (preferably the one you have files you would like to share) on your computer and choose Sharing and Security. You will see a check box, click it. If you choose you may change the share name so that it is shorter or easier to remember. Windows XP will advice you against dharing in this manner and assert that if you know what you are doing to go ahead. If you have set files and folders in your XP Profile to be private you cannot share files in your profile folder this way, you or your administrator will need to disable privacy (I advise against) and now you have a shared folder.

Let’s go back to our Linux Machine.

Now since this is the GUI generation I won’t bore you with the details of the command-line utility SMBClient but rather I’ll give you instruction on using KDE to connect to your windows machine.

The default file manager for KDE is Konquerer. Go ahead and run Konquerer now.

  • In the location bar or address bar type: smb://mywindowsmachinesname/ or smb://mywindowsmachines LAN IP/
In the window you should now see a folder with the name of your Windows XP share. You may now browse this folder as if it were on the local machine!

Remote Desktop Administration between a Linux Based PC and a Windows XP based PC.

There are many times we have the need to take complete control of a machine on our network, sometimes there is a person in the office that needs help and since they are six floors down it is just easier to take over their desktop until the task is complete and then return control to the local user, or sometimes we may be far away and need to access a machine at home. Other times you are like me and really don’t feel like walking into the next room. Behold TightVNC. Its free and easy to use.

  • You will need some tools again.

For your Windows XP machine you will need the TightVNC viewer and Server you can go here and grab that. Download the tightvnc-1.2.9-setup.exe package as it contains everything you need to get started.

  • for your Debian machine type: apt-get install vncserver and then apt-get install vncviewer
  • Connecting to the windows machine from the Linux machine is quite simple. Make sure you are in X-Windows or KDE and open a console. Type vncviewer and a GUI windows should appear that says VNC Server. If the VNCServer is runing on your windows machine, simply type the Local IP address of Windows machine. You should see your Windows Desktop appear before your eyes! You can control the mouse and keyboard just as it you were sitting at the Windows Machine itself!
  • Connecting to the Linux machine is a bit trickier but certainly not harder. Since Debian allows multiple users to utilize X Display the GUI at the same time, you can make vncserver setup a new X Display. at the prompt type vncserver
It will ask for a password to protect the session from intruders. This will be your default password until you change it (see documnetation that comes with VNCServer)It will tell that the server listening on display :1 not display :0 which belongs to the primary X Server.
  • On your Windows Machine click start–>run–> all programs–>TightVNC–>TightVNC Fast Compression.
  • A pop up will appear that say VNC Server: Type in the box linuxmachine Local IP Address:1 and enter the password for the VNCSession. Viola! Linux Desktop!

Windows XP : Clean Your Registry

  1. Download a good registry cleaner.. Watch out for spyware or virii disguised as registry cleaners. One recommended cleaner can be found here.
  2. Install the cleaner.. Double-click the icon of the cleaner you just downloaded. This will usually start an installation wizard. Follow the instructions.
  3. Run your cleaner. Find it in Start>>All Programs>> or on your desktop. Scan your registry for issues, and then click to repair them. The exact method, of course, depends on the registry cleaner you choose.
  4. Perform weekly maintenance. Cleaning your registry at least once a week is recommended. It is highly recommended to run your registry cleaner after you uninstall software, especially freeware from the internet.

change windows xp lost password

1. Before anything else, if you have lost the password of a regular user, ask the computer administrator. If the computer administrator isn’t available at the time, you can do the next best thing. Note that you’ll have to use the command window.

2. If you CAN log on to another account, skip to step 4. If not, go to the next step.

3. You have to reboot your computer. However, press F8 before it has completely booted, so another black screen shows up. In that black screen, use the arrows up and down to scroll options, the option you want to choose is: “Safe Mode with Command Prompt”. Press enter to select that option. Hang in a second. Give it some time to boot; this can take longer than your usual boot-process. When it has booted, you will see the same black screen as in CMD. Go to step 5.

4. If you can log on to another account, you should log in to that account and open the “START” menu. Now, click on “RUN”, and type cmd. A black screen will pop up.

5. In the command screen, you’ll have to type “net user”, followed by the account name that needs password recovery. followed by ” *”. Note the space between the username and the star. (e.g. “net user bob *”)

6. Type in your new password. (You will NOT see any characters) Press enter, and repeat the password.

7. Your password should be changed. Note that if you repeated the passwords with errors it will still say “The command completed successfully”. Therefore, if it did not work, try doing it again. If you used another account on your computer to do this, go to step 3 and try that method.

changing the look of vista to xp

Things You’ll Need:

  • A computer with Windows Vista.
  • The desire to get the look and feel of Windows XP back

Step1

The first step to giving Windows Vista the appearance of Windows XP is to start by changing the way that your start menu looks. It is very simple to do this. First, find the “start” button on the desktop screen. Once you have located this, place your mouse pointer on it and click the right mouse button.

Step2

Once you have done this, a menu will appear. You want to locate the option referred to as “properties”. Once you have found this option, highlight it using your mouse. Then, click your left mous button to select it. A new box should appear called “Start Menu Properties”. You will want to read the information in this box and locate “classic Start Menu”. Use your mouse to select it, then click ok. You now have the look and feel of Windows XP in Windows Vista as far as the Start menu is concerned!

Step3

The next way that you can help Windows Vista to look more like Windows XP is to personalize the desktop. This is relatively easy to accomplish. Simply choose an area on the desktop screen where nothing is located and click the right button on your mouse.

Step4

Once you have done this, a new set of options will appear. Simply select “Personalize”. Once the new screen appear, select “Choose Theme”. A pull-down menu will appear that contains many different choices. The one that you want to select will be called “Windows Classic”. Once this option is highlighted by clicking the left mouse button, you can click on “OK” with that same button. Now, the overall theme of Windows Vista will reflect that of the familiar Windows XP.

Step5

The next method that you can use to give Vista the appearance of XP is to change the appearance of the folders that you use. You will open the “Documents” folder on your computer. This is normally located in the area of the “Start” menu. Once this opens, you should see the “organize” option.

Step6

Once you elect the organize option, simply select the following options: “folder”, “search”, and then a new option will appear. You will want to select the option called “Use Windows Classic Folders”. Once you have done this, select “OK”.

How to make your laptop battery life last longer

Things You’ll Need:

  • Time
  • A Laptop

Step1

Defragmet your hard drive regularly - The less your hard drive spins - less demand you are going to put on the hard drive and your battery. Make your hard drive as efficient as possible by defragging it regularly.

Step2

Dim your screen - Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

Step3

Cut down on programs running in the background. Itunes, Desktop Search, etc. All these add to the CPU load and cut down battery life. Shut down everything that isn’t crucial when you’re on battery.

Step4

Cut down external devices - USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

Step5

Add more RAM - This will allow you to process more with the memory your laptop has, rather than relying on virtual memory. Virtual memory results in hard drive use, and is much less power efficient. Note that adding more RAM will consume more energy, so this is most applicable if you do need to run memory intensive programs which actually require heavy usage of virtual memory.

Step6

Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD - As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming.

You can even use programs like Microsoft’s Virtual CD ROM program to make a file to use like a virtual CD.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpvirtualcd.html

Step7

Keep the battery contacts clean: Clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months with a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol. This keeps the transfer of power from your battery more efficient.

Step8

Take care of your battery - Exercise the Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

Step9

Hibernate not standby - Although placing a laptop in standby mode saves some power and you can instantly resume where you left off, it doesn’t save anywhere as much power as the hibernate function does. Hibernating a PC will actually save your PC’s state as it is, and completely shut itself down.

Step10

Keep operating temperature down - Your laptop operates more efficiently when it’s cooler. Clean out your air vents with a cloth or keyboard cleaner.

Step11

Set up and optimize your power options - Go to ‘Power Options’ in your windows control panel and set it up so that power usage is optimized (Select the ‘max battery’ for maximum effect).

Step12

Don’t multitask - Do one thing at a time when you’re on battery. Rather than working on a spreadsheet, letting your email client run in the background and listening to your latest set of MP3’s, set your mind to one thing only. If you don’t you’ll only drain out your batteries before anything gets completed!

Step13

Go easy on the PC demands - The more you demand from your PC. Passive activities like email and word processing consume much less power than gaming or playing a DVD. If you’re got a single battery charge - pick your priorities wisely.

Step14

Get yourself a more efficient laptop - Laptops are getting more and more efficient in nature to the point where some manufacturers are talking about all day long batteries. Picking up a newer more efficient laptop to replace an aging one is usually a quick fix

Step15

Turn off the autosave function. MS-Word or Excel’s autosave functions are great but because they keep saving regular intervals, they work your hard driver harder than it may have to. If you plan to do this, you may want to turn it back on as the battery runs low. While it saves battery life in the beginning, you will want to make sure your work is saved when your battery dies.

Step4

From there Right click “My computer” and then Left Click “Properties”

Step5

Then click the “Advanced” tab and then the “Settings” button under Performance.

Step6
